Burns usually result in the loss of large sections of the skin. The resulting scar contracts the edges of the wound. This process is called burn scar contracture.
| Duration of surgery | Duration depends on the localisation and magnitude |
|---|---|
| Anaesthesia | Local or general anaesthesia |
| Hospital stay | Outpatient |
| Ability to move around and socialise | Depends on the localisation and magnitude |
| Ability to work | After 5 to 7 days |
Scar contracture can also affect the muscles and tendons, thus leading also to restriction of normal mobility. Correction involves either a skin transplant or a flap plasty. However, special techniques such as Z-plasty are also applied often. The question of whether improvement is possible through surgery or not can only be answered after a personal meeting and extensive examination.
