Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The carpal tunnel is an anatomical passage through the wrist. It contains all flexor tendons and one of the three important hand nerves, the median nerve. A number of reasons can cause a pressure increase within the canal. Those include rheumatoid arthritis, injury, and liquid build-up during pregnancy. Overuse due to unilateral strain can also be a reason.

The result is a higher pressure on the nerve, which causes a tingling sensation, or obdormition, of the fingers (often at night, too). Other symptoms of the carpal tunnel system can be sensory disturbances, decreased functionality of the hand and pain. Whether or not surgery is required can only be determined following personal talks and thorough examinations.
